Farm History

This beautiful Klein Karoo farm lies a mere 15 km west of Ladismith between hills, mountains and valleys.

The first official owner of this gem farm can unfortunately only be traced as far back as about 1820.

Jan Abraham Nel was a cattle farmer, who farmed on the farm Brandriver in the district of Barrydale. Jan Nel had a herdsman with the name of Algeryn who manned Jan’s animal outpost. Algeryn built an impressive cattle kraal for himself from the local stone and over time Algeryn's kraal changed to Algerynskraal.
Philip Lodewyk La Grange who grew up at Touwsberg, married Elizabeth Maria Lombard in 1864 and bought the cattle outpost – now officially called Algerynskraal, from Jan Nel - probably in the year they were married. They settled there and had 10 sons and 8 daughters.

All the boys, except the eldest, built houses for themselves on the farm in time and remained farmers on Algerynskraal. Some of the boys of Jan gave their portions of the farm a different name, but Algerynskraal continued to exist as the overarching name.

Most of the La Grange brothers were later succeeded by a son and Algerynskraal belonged to the La Grange family until the mid-nineteen sixties. From 1966 onwards, the farms were sold one after the other to outsiders.

Mr. Malcolm McGown became the proud owner of most of the remaining Algerynskraal property in 1981. In 1984 Mr. McGown obtained the portion of land on which Algeryn’s original stone kraal still exists today.

The last La Grange landowner on Algerynskraal was Cornelius Theodorus La Grange, a grandson of Kerneels and Miemie La Grange who lived on Tierkop.

The remains of this historic old cattle outpost can still be seen on the farm, which to this day bears Algeryn's name. Serious consideration is being given to restoring it and transforming it into a pleasant socialising-braai place for the people of Kannaland and visiting guests.

Today, one of the beautiful farmhouses, built around 1898, has been converted into a spacious guest house. The lovely guest house has recently been renamed 'Magoo on 62' – the nickname of Malcolm McGown and of course it borders the R62 between Barrydale and Ladismith in the Kannaland district.
